- The chapters
of the Internet Society represent local communities.
- They began
to form in 1994.
- To start
a chapter a group of at least 25 individuals already members of the Internet
Society was required, who have all signed a draft statute for a local chapter
outlining its principles.
- The first
attempt to promote an Italian chapter began in 1998 with two initiatives:
one by the university of Cassino, the second by a group in Cagliari including
CRS4.
- In July
'98 Mario Chiari, a publicist interested in the Internet, announced that
he was available, following Internet Society procedures, to fill the role
of proposing party for constitution of the Italy Chapter of ISOC, and then
began to contact other ISOC members in Italy, immediately enrolling Stefano
Trumpy, who was then Chair of the Advisory Board of ISOC.
- Trumpy
in turn involved the Institute of Informatics and Telematics (formerly
CNUCE) of the CNR.
- The chapter
would be a non-profit seeking organization, operating with the sole aim
of scientific research, improving professional knowledge and promoting
the culture of the Internet and its correct use at national level.
- The domain
"isoc.it" was registered, the statute was fully defined and the
Chapter mission was discussed.
- In spring
1999 the request for recognition of the Chapter was submitted to Ole Jacobsen,
Vice Chairman of the Chapters for ISOC, at the INET 1999 conference; the
chapter was recognized on 29 June 1999.
- The founding
meeting of the Italian Chapter was held in Florence on 17 March 2000 at
the offices of DADA spa. In the presence of notary public Mr. Piccinini,
those present signed the deed of incorporation of the association and its
statute and elected its officers.
- The section
was finally operational and took the name "Società Internet".
- THE FOUNDING
MEETING OF THE ITALIAN CHAPTER, MARCH 2000
- The members
later decided to use in the association's logo a reference to the parent
organization, adopting the text: "ISOC - Italia" and since then
is commonly known as ISOC ITALIA.
